The Naked and the Dead

The Naked and the DeadMailer describes the suffocating jungle and climate in exquisite prose. While action scenes do occur, and these are brilliantly dealt with, the focus is on the psyche of the soldiers: their contempt for the army and its soul-crushing repetitiveness, their deep-rooted religious and social prejudices and their masochistic ruminations of spousal infidelity.
The stilted dialogue in the Naked and the Dead, as well as the appended expositions produce a kaleidoscopic confusion of characters and Mailer’s employment of manufactured profanity imbues the characterization with incredulity.
